You Get What You Specify
In renovations, material quality is directly visible and directly tied to durability. A $10/sq ft laminate floor will show wear in 7 years; a $50/sq ft hardwood floor looks beautiful for 25 years. A cheap vinyl plank looks plasticky; quality engineered hardwood looks warm and real.
Many contractors offer tiered ‘packages’ basic, standard, premium without specifying actual brands or grades. This gives them flexibility to substitute cheap alternatives and pocket the difference.
At RenoDuck, your estimate specifies every material by brand, grade, and colour. You know exactly what’s going into your renovation. And we source from manufacturers with strong reputation and warranty support.
Our Material Selection Philosophy
We prioritize materials that:
- Are Durable: Materials designed for residential use, with proven longevity in Canadian homes.
- Have Strong Warranties: Manufacturer backing means you’re protected beyond our 15-year warranty.
- Are Appropriate for Ontario Climate: GTA homes face seasonal temperature swings, humidity shifts, and freeze-thaw cycles. We choose materials that weather these conditions.
- Offer Aesthetic Value: Your renovation should be beautiful, not just functional. We select finishes that enhance your home’s design and feel.
Flooring
Hardwood: We source Canadian hardwoods (oak, maple, walnut) from mills with sustainable harvesting practices. Premium grades with minimal knots and grain variation cost more but they’re worth it. Expect 25-30 years of beauty with proper care.
Engineered Hardwood: More stable than solid hardwood in basements or areas with humidity. We select 3-5mm wear layers and real wood veneers, not paper overlays.
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): If you’re choosing vinyl, we source premium LVP with realistic wood/stone texture and 10 – 15 year warranties. Budget vinyl looks cheap; quality LVP rivals hardwood in appearance.
Ceramic & Porcelain Tile: We select tiles with strong ratings for slip resistance and durability. Grout and sealant are equally important professional-grade products that resist staining and moisture.
Cabinetry & Countertops
Cabinetry: Custom cabinets built by our in-house team use solid wood frames, dovetail joinery, and premium hinges (soft-close mechanisms that last decades). Face veneers are real wood, not plastic laminate. Finish is conversion varnish or polyurethane tougher than water-based stains.
Countertops: Quartz engineered stone is our default recommendation. It’s durable, non-porous (no sealing), and available in hundreds of finishes. For premium applications, we offer solid surface or honed granite. We avoid laminate in kitchen applications, it doesn’t hold up to daily use.
Plumbing & Fixtures
We specify fixtures from manufacturers with strong reputations: Kohler, Moen, Delta, Grohe. These brands offer decades of parts availability and warranty support, important if you need a replacement valve or cartridge 15 years from now.
For basement renovations, we use commercial-grade plumbing rated for potential moisture exposure. Pipes are copper or PEX with proper slope and venting. Sump pump systems are dual-pump with battery backup, critical insurance for basements in flood-prone areas.
Electrical & HVAC
Electrical panels and breakers meet or exceed Ontario Building Code standards. We don’t cut corners on safety.
Ductwork is sealed and insulated for energy efficiency. Smart thermostats are integrated with modern HVAC systems to optimize performance across seasons.
Drywall, Insulation & Waterproofing
Drywall is moisture-resistant (greenboard) in bathrooms and basements, never standard drywall in wet areas.
Insulation is selected for R-value and moisture performance. We use closed-cell spray foam in basements (prevents water infiltration), and batt insulation in above-grade walls.
Waterproofing is applied to foundation walls before backfill: a combination of sealants, membranes, and exterior drainage systems designed to keep basements dry.
The Cost of Premium Materials
Yes, premium materials cost more upfront. A hardwood floor costs 3 – 5× more than budget laminate. Quality cabinetry costs more than particleboard alternatives.
But here’s the maths: a $40,000 renovation with cheap materials might look worn in 10 years, requiring $15,000+ in updates; a $42,000 renovation with premium materials looks fresh for 25+ years. Over the life of your home, quality wins on cost.
RenoDuck’s estimate specifies material costs clearly so you can make informed choices. Want to upgrade to premium hardwood? We’ll show you the cost difference. Prefer budget LVP? We’ll support that choice, but we won’t misrepresent it as ‘premium.’
