Why Licensing & Insurance Matter in Renovation

A renovation involves structural work, electrical installation, plumbing, and building-code compliance. These aren’t DIY tasks, they require licensed professionals operating under regulatory oversight.

When you hire RenoDuck, every tradesperson on your site is licensed by the Province of Ontario and carries active liability insurance. This protects both you and your home.

Many unlicensed contractors in the GTA operate to avoid licensing fees and regulatory burden. But unlicensed work doesn’t just risk poor quality, it can void your home insurance, create code-compliance issues that block future sales, and expose you to liability if someone is injured on your property.

RenoDuck’s Licensing Standards

All electricians working on RenoDuck projects are licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or the Ontario College of Trades (Skilled Trades Ontario). They carry a valid journeyperson or electrician’s certificate.

All plumbers are licensed journeypersons through Skilled Trades Ontario or PEO, with knowledge of Ontario Building Code plumbing standards.

Our General Contractor holds a provincial contractor license and maintains continuous liability insurance ($5M+ coverage). We’re also registered with Ontario’s Home Warranty Plan (OHWP) for eligible projects.

Every project manager and site supervisor on our team has Home Renovation Industry Association (HRIA) training and holds a valid WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) account for safe job-site management.

Insurance Coverage That Protects You

RenoDuck carries:

  • General Liability Insurance: $5M+ coverage for property damage and bodily injury claims arising from our work.
  • Builder’s Risk Insurance: On your property during the renovation, covering theft, weather damage, and accidental damage to your home during construction.
  • WSIB Coverage: Protects workers and you from accident/injury liability.
  • All subcontractors carry equivalent coverage, verified before they step on your property.

Code Compliance & Permits

Every RenoDuck renovation includes proper permitting and city inspections. When your basement is underpinned, a new electrical panel is installed, or plumbing is extended, a municipal inspector signs off confirming code compliance.

This isn’t just about doing things “the right way”, it protects your home’s resale value. A future buyer’s inspector will verify that major work was permitted and inspected. Unpermitted work can derail a sale or trigger expensive corrective work.

Our permit acquisition process is handled by your project manager, ensuring all documentation is complete and inspections are scheduled on time.

Your Protection as a Homeowner

When you hire RenoDuck, you’re protected by:

  • Verified Licensing: Every tradesperson is licensed and in good standing.
  • Active Insurance: Proof of coverage is on file and current.
  • Written Contract: A detailed contract outlining scope, timeline, payment terms, and warranty.
  • OHWP Registration: Eligible new home and renovation work is covered by Ontario’s Home Warranty Plan (deposit protected, work guaranteed).
  • Dispute Resolution: If a disagreement arises, we have a formal process to address it—no contractor disappearing or dodging warranty claims.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring Any Contractor

When you interview contractors, ask for:

  1. Proof of licensing (ask to verify directly with the licensing body)
  2. Current liability insurance certificate (call the insurer to confirm)
  3. WSIB account number (to verify active coverage)
  4. List of completed projects in the past 12 months (call 3 – 5 references)
  5. Copy of your written contract before work begins
  6. Clarification on warranty coverage and claims process
